I keep a running list of potential titles for things as I think of them. It’s gotten pretty long at this point and it’s probably safe to say I will never in my life create as many projects as I’ve thought of titles for. I wish I was as good at taking pictures as I am at thinking of titles and also if I could go into business writing titles, I would probably make a million dollars.
I’m sitting behind the desk at the Bond Street Gallery right now. There’s an art walk going on in the area so there’s more people coming in and out of here than usual. The question I’ve been asked today more times than any other is, “Are you the photographer?”
Why are people asking me this? Are they retarded? Have they never been in a gallery before? Is it that shocking that there would be a commercial space in Brooklyn? I don’t understand, but the next person to ask me this question is going to get punched in the face.
Two years ago, I started this blog to sort of track my attempt to get into a photography MFA program. I think it was all the ruminating about education and my future, along with my patented and award-winning Grad School Scorecard, that attracted some readers from outside my immediate circle of friends, Amy Stein and Jen Bekman among them.
It’s pretty embarassing to think about all that now. The work I used was terrible and I basically didn’t know anything about anything and I don’t know why anybody gave me the time of day. No doubt I was eliminated in the very first cut from three out of five of the schools schools I applied to. I have no explanation for my performance at the other two given the circumstances. but I somehow got an interview at Columbia and was accepted to ICP-Bard. So all in all, it was a pretty encouraging result.
It’s probably still a little too early for me to be applying again, but I’m going to do it anyway. I have a infinitely more complex understanding of what it is I do, I’m developing a new body of work that I find exhilirating and I think I may be able to muster some pretty decent reccomendations depending on how things go in the next couple of months. And I’ve also reached the point where I feel like I need the knowledge.
So! It’s my extreme pleasure to present you with the hot new Grad School Scorecard, fully loaded for the 2009 academic year. Six programs, all competitve, and I’m still considering a couple others. What’s my safety school? Don’t have one. That’s just how I roll. It’s fucking Go Time, y’all.
…is a British illustrator I met at a bar the other night. The story’s kind of funny. I was flirting with her and asked her for her number. She gave me her card. When I emailed the other day to say it was nice to meet her and would she like to hang out, she wrote back something along the lines of, “I met two Gregs that night. Which one are you?”
Well, okay, so that aside, she’s talented and doing interesting work so here’s her thing. She has two projects up on her site, I pulled one image from each. Commission her for something sometime.
