The Avenue in the Rain
Frederick Childe Hassam
American, b. 1859

Painted in 1917, it depicts a flag-bedecked 5th Ave on a rainy winter day. Hassam was a fervent supporter of US involvement in World War I and did a series of patriotic flag paintings during the war, of which this is the most famous. It has long been a presidential favorite and is so closely associated with the Oval Office that had it has adorned the walls of many a fictional White House.

Can you tell me what the painting is in on the back wall - the flag painting behind Biden? It was in Clinton's Oval Office too. Thanks!
